Seminar on Smart Grid Development and Applications
Professor H. W. Ngan, Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Mr. Dennis Wong, Vice President of ASAT Solutions, Inc.
6:30 – 8:30pm
Hong Kong Polytechnic University (lecture room TU106)
Organized by: Electronics and Communications Section, IET Hong Kong
Supported by: IEEE CE Society Chapter, Hong Kong; Power and Energy Section, IET Hong Kong
Electric
utilities are facing emerging challenges in today’s operating
environment. Deregulation, emissions control, talent retention,
shareholder expectation on investment return, network stability and
reliability...each one of them exerts tremendous pressure to drive
utilities being more efficient in addressing issues like energy
efficiency, network security and reliability. In addition to upgrading
the infrastructure to eliminate aging equipment, utilities around the
globe are promoting and piloting the Smart Grid model that would allow
them to leverage on electronics control and communications technologies
to address demand-side management, harness distributed renewable energy
sources, enhance supply reliability and network security, and provide
real-time condition monitoring.
The
first section of this seminar will provide an overview on Smart Grid’s
definition, background, drivers, world trend and challenges. The second
section will focus on Smart Substation, one of the key components being
facilitated by Smart Grid at the substation level. This section will
look at the transformation from conventional technology to digital
devices for wise use of information, all supported and driven by the
IEC 61850 standard. Speakers of both sections will address user
benefits, effectiveness of Smart Grid technologies, and their impacts
from a macro perspective.and shutter control to heating, ventilation,
security, energy management, and many more. A technical demonstration
will be presented during the training.

Abstract:
A hot debate has been ongoing about the technology of choice for next
generation wireless access, with high (>50Mbps) data upload and
download rates, multiservice support and guaranteed Quality of Service
(QoS). The entire next generation system will be based on all-IP
technology – from access to the core, with circuit-switching available
as a fall-back option. Today, operators are mainly debating between two
standard options for wireless access, the data-centric WiMAX (Wireless
Interoperability for Microwave Access) and voice-centric LTE (Long Term
Evolution). These two standards have a lot of similarities as both are
based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and leverage
multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna technology to work
effectively in denser areas. Both WiMAX and LTE bring a specific focus
and hence can be seen as complementary, rather than competing
technologies. Their eventual success will be measured by a combination
of Technology Performance, Coverage, Supported Devices and
Applications. In this seminar, the basics of WiMax and LTE, including
their similarity and difference, will be discussed. More detailed
discussions will be devoted to LTE, including related measurements.
